IEC 60364 Reference

ElectroBoard includes a reference to the key international IEC standards for low-voltage electrical installations — plain-language summaries with links to the official publications.

Address: /iec

What is IEC 60364

IEC 60364 is a series of International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards for low-voltage electrical installations. It covers protection against electric shock, protection against overcurrent, cable cross-section selection, and wiring methods. Together with related standards (assemblies, circuit breakers, RCDs) it is the basis for panel design in most countries.

By default, new projects in ElectroBoard use IEC 60364 as the primary standard. You can change it in Settings → Standard.

Reference Structure

28 clauses from 9 IEC standards:

Standard Topic Clauses
IEC 60364-4-41 Protection against electric shock 7
IEC 60364-4-43 Protection against overcurrent 3
IEC 60364-5-52 Wiring systems: selection and erection 6
IEC 60364-5-55 Other equipment 1
IEC 61439-1 Low-voltage switchgear assemblies 5
IEC 60445 Identification of conductors 2
IEC 60947-2 Circuit breakers 2
IEC 61008-1 RCCBs without integral overcurrent protection 1
IEC 61009-1 RCBOs with integral overcurrent protection 1

Each clause has:

  • An ElectroBoard summary — a concise plain-language explanation of the clause (marked with an EB SUMMARY badge)
  • An AI explanation — an additional plain-language rewrite for quick understanding
  • A link to the official IEC publication on webstore.iec.ch

⚠️ Important: these summaries are ElectroBoard's convenience notes, not the normative IEC text. The full, legally binding text of each standard is published by the IEC at webstore.iec.ch.

  • Standards list /iec — all 9 standards with topic and clause count
  • Standard page /iec/[standard] — all clauses of a standard (e.g. /iec/60364-4-41)
  • Individual clause /iec/[standard]/[clause] — deep link to a clause (e.g. /iec/60364-4-41/411.1)

Press ⌘K (or the / key) on any reference page to open the quick search palette. Find a clause by number or text and move between results with the keyboard. On mobile, search opens full-screen.

AI Consultant and Validator Integration

IEC clauses are indexed for the AI consultant — when the AI cites a standard in an answer, the link opens the corresponding reference page. ElectroBoard validators reference IEC via StandardRefBadge: clicking the badge in the validation panel opens the relevant clause.

A single rule can reference several standards at once — all badges are shown in the validation panel.

Limitations

  • The summaries are ElectroBoard's own notes, not the official normative IEC text — always verify against the current edition of the standard at webstore.iec.ch
  • 28 key clauses from 9 standards are covered, not the full scope of the IEC 60364 series
  • AI explanations are generated automatically and may contain inaccuracies
